FAIRBANKS — Retired sprint dog musher Lynn Orbison is heading south today hauling a truckload of donated dog supplies to aid in the care of 156 neglected and starving dogs seized by troopers Monday from a Montana Creek breeder in the Susitna Valley.

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Animal Shelter, overwhelmed by the sudden influx of sick and dying dogs and puppies, is welcoming donations of supplies and money to care for the animals, most of which require treatment and special foods to get them well.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner is serving as a drop off point for smaller items needed by the Palmer-area shelter that will be delivered next week by local volunteers.

Items requested include metal dog bowls, blankets, towels, latex gloves and medium and large pet crates.

Hello everyone,

I have met some wonderful and pretty amazing people through organizing the Shiba Meetups and being involved with the breed. I have been in contact with people across Canada, USA and around the world who are just as passionate about Shibas as I am. There is one person in particular who has done some amazing work and pours her heart and soul into Shiba rescue. Her name is Denise Roelke and she is the founder and president of NW Shibas4Life (NWSR) a Shiba rescue group serving Washington and Oregon. With the help of her husband Tony and many other volunteers, they have saved and rescued many Shibas from horrible, abusive situations including puppy mills. They have rehabilitated and rehomed many Shibas, some of which have made their homes here in BC (shout out to Mooki).

For the past few years, NW Shibas4Life publishes a calendar that features photos of some of the dogs they've rescued and found new homes for as well as photos of rescues that other people have submitted. They calendars are sold for a reasonable price with 100% of the profits to benefit the rescue group. Our own little Barkley will be featured in the calendar! He is the star of November and he has quite a few cameo photos  in some of the other months as well. Look for his cameos in July & October and see if you can spot him in some of the others.

Please consider purchasing a calendar and supporting Shiba rescue or better yet, adopt a rescued Shiba! For those Meetup members that have adopted a rescue, I applaud you!
